Common Questions
Adult gender-affirming hormone care focuses on your individual goals and whether hormone treatment is appropriate for your needs. Feminizing and masculinizing treatment have different possible effects, risks, and monitoring requirements. This page addresses adult care. Questions about hormone replacement for other goals are covered separately.
You can discuss the changes you are seeking, your medical history, current medicines, and any previous hormone treatment. We consider suitable options and ongoing hormone and metabolic monitoring. Fertility goals also belong in that conversation. Relevant metabolic concerns may affect the evaluation and follow-up plan.
Costs depend on consultations, recommended testing, prescribed medicines, and ongoing monitoring. Coverage and prior approval requirements vary by the specific insurance plan and service. Insurance protections under state law do not mean every plan covers every treatment or provider. Check your benefits and contact the practice for office billing questions.
Discuss fertility goals before starting hormones, since treatment may affect future reproductive options and some effects can persist. We discuss fertility preservation and referral when appropriate. Testosterone is not contraception. Pregnancy prevention and preventive care should be considered according to the organs you have and your individual health needs.
Changes develop at different rates and depend on the treatment, your body, and individual goals. Some effects may be permanent, and a specific appearance or timeline cannot be promised. Ongoing diabetes care or thyroid care may also need coordination when those conditions are present.
